Shorehouse
Lobster Roll · encinitas · $$$
Buttered split-top, cold lobster, a whisper of celery. Eat it on the patio while a guy on a longboard explains something to his dog.

A crisp white and a slightly sunburned face
Coast Highway 101 in summer is its own kind of weather, and the Shorehouse patio sits in it. My cousin doesn't like lobster rolls on principle — he says cold lobster is deli salad in disguise — and he still concedes this one is good. That counts.
“Coastal, but not in the Instagram way.”
The bread
Split-top, brushed with butter, gridded on the flat-top. The split-top is the right move — stands up vertically, holds the salad, browns evenly. My cousin gives it a generous score he won't admit to out loud. He's protective of his anti-cold-lobster position.
The filling
Cold lobster salad, light on the mayo, a whisper of celery. Lemon, salt, pepper, restraint. The whole point of a New England roll is that the lobster does the talking and you mostly stay out of its way. Shorehouse stays out of its way.
The people
Patio kitchen, locals, a longboard guy who's out there once a week explaining the world to a Labrador. The wait staff have been there long enough that you watch their kids grow up between visits.
The verdict
A New England sandwich that earned a spot on a San Diego list because the room and the kitchen both earn it. It's the only sandwich on the list I'd take a date to. My cousin would rather not go on principle. Don't listen to him.
